he door was flung open and Semil strode in furiously, slamming it behind him. He was fuming. He was surrounded by incompetents. No one had any vision or any ideas. His territories in Vitae were being harassed daily by Aadron’s troops, and his men seemed to know only how to retreat. He flung down the missive that had come that day. His captain in Sylven had sent it. He wanted more men, he said, to defend Sylven. Aadron was besieging the town claiming that he had given refuge to the Assassins.

Semil couldn’t believe how foolhardy his captain had been. His spies had confirmed that the man had indeed offered refuge to the Assassins who were fleeing from Aadron’s forces. Aadron, the reports had said, had struck both at the Thieves and the Assassins in one stroke. The Thieves were completely destroyed while some of the Assassins had fled to Sylven. Only a fool would have taken them in. Only a fool would have failed to realise that Aadron would pursue them wherever they might flee. Aadron was tenacious, and though it was Syamin whom Semil was wary about, it seemed he was about to lose Sylven due to the stupidity and avarice of his captain.

He gnashed his teeth, flinging himself down on his couch. He could send men, but by the time they got there, it was likely that they would find Aadron holding the city. They might win the city back, but it was a chance only, and he didn’t want to be fighting a war on two fronts just at present. He had to concentrate on Mirrel, and on Syamin. If Amrose and Cadgen were successful, he would be receiving news soon. It might not be easy or even possible for them to send news, which was why he had to move on Mirrel soon. He had already split up his forces into smaller troops and directed them to move to Mirrel on various days so that the troop movement would not be obvious and he would have an element of surprise on his side. He wasn’t ready to change his plans now. Not for Sylven. It’s only value was that it had once been the capital of the Empire, but that city was gone, and the town there wasn’t worth changing his plans for. He was going to win it all, or he would lose utterly like he did the last time he had fought Syamin. He wasn’t going to fight Aadron and Syamin at the same time. It was time this false peace ended anyway, and his attack on Mirrel would do that.

He put his hand inside his shirt to draw out a golden chain at the end of which was a locket. He opened it to gaze at the miniature portrait of a woman. She was pale, and smiling. Her face resembled Semil’s. He caressed the portrait before closing it and lying back, his eyes gazing at the ceiling. He still remembered her vividly. Amria
